Ocean-based solutions can solve one-third of the climate crisis.

The Blue Climate Collective is a network of start-ups and stakeholders working to elevate the ocean as a climate solution.

Incubated and launched by Only One in 2023 and now managed by Tectonic, the Collective hosts regular community gatherings to foster collaboration, creates content to amplify members with business and financial audiences, and works to marshal blended capital from the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to help solutions scale.

What are ocean-based climate solutions?

Marine life and coastal communities face dire threats, but in the midst of these challenges, the ocean emerges as a formidable ally in the fight against the climate crisis. Seven ocean-based climate solutions outlined in the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy report have the potential to close up to 35% of the carbon emissions gap needed to keep the planet on track for 1.5℃ by mid-century.

In addition to providing a new pathway to a climate-resilient future, ocean-based solutions offer a host of co-benefits, including economic growth, employment opportunities, biodiversity protection, and improved food security. Until now, the ocean has too often been overlooked and underfunded — an underdog in the climate sector. These solutions must be prioritized to scale the global response to climate change.

What does it mean to be a member of the Blue Climate Collective?

The 75+ members of the Blue Climate Collective are pursuing a range of methods to scale ocean-based climate solutions, including work to develop ocean-based renewable energy, decarbonize marine transport and tourism, promote sustainable fishing and aquaculture, capture and sequester carbon, and support coastal and marine ecosystems.

There is no financial cost to join, but members share a commitment to collaboration to help elevate and advance ocean-based climate solutions.

Benefits for members of the Blue Climate Collective include:

  • Amplification of members and their solutions through a range of content produced by the Collective, including social and earned media, as well as promotion at key conferences and to climate and tech journalists;
  • Monthly email communications from the Collective to members, sharing relevant updates, research, news, and other key resources about members and the sector;
  • Regular in-person gatherings either in locations where there is a significant membership base, or on the sidelines of a related conference where a large number of members is present (e.g., COP28 or the World Economic Forum);
  • Quarterly virtual briefings and convenings of the full Collective, plus an annual summit for members beginning in 2024;
  • Frequent touchpoints throughout the year between the Collective team and members to identify additional needs and opportunities to support and scale the work of members.
